The health benefits of vitamin C

Vitamin C or the L-ascorbic acid is extremely important for the human body because of all the health benefits it has. Besides the fact that it is a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C is necessary in the metabolic processing of carbohydrates, folic acid, collagen and some amino acids. Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals, helps your body form the bones and teeth, reduces the level of blood sugar and cholesterol, favors the absorption of iron and increases the resistance of your blood vessels.

Vitamin C also helps strengthen your immune system. It is especially good for your organism to increase the quantity of vitamin C you eat daily when you have a cold, influenza or any infectious disease. Vitamin C has anti-infectious and renewing properties. If you suffer from vascular, digestive or respiratory diseases, scurvy, anemia, anorexia, allergies, stress, lack of calcium, hemorrhages, diabetes, asthma and rheumatism you should consider increasing the daily dose of vitamin C that you take.

The daily necessary dose of vitamin C is of 50 mg for children and up to 100 mg for adults. Pregnant women, smokers, old age persons, workers working in led filled environments and those suffering of infectious diseases, ulcer, and tuberculosis should consume more vitamin C daily.

The lack of vitamin C form the human body leads to scurvy that manifests itself by gum bleeding, low immunity, hemorrhages, anemia and joint pains.

Everybody knows that the foods with the highest content of vitamin C are citrus fruits: lemons contain up to 40 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams of fruit, oranges, grapefruits… Other foods rich in vitamin C are tomatoes, cauliflower, peppers, potatoes, parsley…
