IronMan star Robert Downey Jr. impressed audiences with his lean, buff, and well cut physique as engineering genius Tony stark, but the 5 foot 8 actor is quick to admit that it tooks months of hard work on his and his trainer’s part to get the rock-hard muscles Robert has now.

Robert-Downey-Jr.jpg“The challenge here was to keep him from looking too much like a superhero.  His character is an alcoholic and a womanizer, and he’s an arms dealer. They didn’t want a six-pack or bulging muscles, but they wanted to see that he had the power to forge iron,” Robert’s personal trainer states.

Robert Downey Jr.’s diet adheres to a high protein diet that involves consumption of 2,500 to 3,200 calories a day. Such diet is among the most popular diets these days simply because everyone can benefit from eating foods high in protein.

This may fit anyone whose goal is to increase their muscle, gain weight, get big, lose weight or lose fat, stay lean and a lot more because certainly, the diet will fit you. But Robert Downey Jr.’s diet still needs to be modified a little to suit his needs or the changes he wants to achieve.

An example of Robert Downey Jr.’s diet plan includes the following:

  • Breakfast: 2 eggs (scrambled or boiled with low fat margarine), 2 pieces of sliced toast, 1 sausage link, ½ sliced grapefruit or orange, or 3 slices of tomatoes, and ½ cup low-fat milk
  • Lunch: 2 slices of whole wheat bread, 3 oz chicken salad (3 oz chicken with ½ tsp light mayonnaise and 4 grape halves), 1 cup sliced vegetables, 8 oz water, unsweetened tea or coffee
  • Dinner: 1 cup of green beans, carrots or broccoli, 4 oz lean chicken, beef, pork or fish (cooked or pan fried)

For Robert Downey Jr.’s exercise routine, he works out five times a week which includes weight-lifting, intensive martial arts training, along with cardio exercises. His personal trainer Brad Bose also added the use of different unique equipment as part of his fitness routine. One of which is the AB-Inforcer, a device that works for the core muscles and at the same time, teaches the proper alignment of the spine.

Robert Downey Jr.’s exercise program also includes the use of the Pineapple, a vibrating platform that compels him to make use of his core muscles and leg muscles too. He can actually do weight lifting, cardio workouts, or even yoga while he uses this device. Last equipment is the Vortex that quickly adapts to the size, strength and physique of the user wherein different exercises can be done even with a small space only.
