The Alkaline Diet has become increasingly popular in recent years, and although the basic concept behind this eating plan has been around since the 1920s, it burst into the mainstream with the publication of pH Miracle in 2003. Since then, the Alkaline Diet has been adopted by countless individuals, from ordinary homemakers to celebrities in search for the solution of weight and health problems. But how exactly does the Alkaline Diet operate on the body system?
The theory behind the Alkaline Diet is the pH of the body. Apparently, the body’s normal pH range is between 7.36 and 7.44, which is alkaline. A pH of 7 is considered neutral, the higher you go on the scale, the more alkaline, and the lower you go on the scale the more acidic.
The human body is supposed to be alkaline, and this is the general principle in which the whole alkaline diet revolves at. Proponents of the Alkaline Diet argue that when individuals’ intake of food is more alkaline-forming, there is less stress on the body to maintain its normal pH range, therefore giving the body the best possible condition for repair and optimal health.
It is believed that when an individual consumes food considered ‘acidic’, the body’s cells and immune system would not be able to rebuild tissues efficiently, and will lead to the formation of acidic wastes inside the body. When this condition persists for a long time, it could lead to many diseases such as stroke, hypertension, obesity and heart illnesses.
The Alkaline Diet Plan
The diet encourages consumption of foods having an alkalizing effect on the body, foods rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium are highly recommended.
The Alkaline Diet puts a large emphasis on eating a variety of fresh vegetables, citrus fruits, legumes, as well as roots and tubers.
Consuming dairy products, grains, meat, shellfish, caffeine, alcohol and too much salt is frowned upon when using this diet, because the introduction of these foods into the body give a dramatic rise to the blood acid levels.
More and more people are starting to hear about the Alkaline Diet or references to the pH of foods. Many holistic practicioners and well-rounded nutritionists have considered this diet to be of utmost importance when it comes to optimizing health and preventing diseases. The alkaline diet is based on some serious chemistry, however, you don’t need to be a chemist to benefit from it.
