Slimming World Diet: The Benefits Of Food Optimizing

In over 40 years, British company Slimming World has helped millions of dieters acroos the UK win battles with the bulge with their weight loss classes every week. Then, their founder Margaret Miles-Bramwell decided it wasn’t enough, and with the goal of reaching out to more individuals globally, she came up with the Slimming World Diet, an eating program aimed to be a "flexible, empowering, permissive approach to healthy eating."


The Slimming World Diet has it’s own Food Optimizing strategy. Food Optimizing is purportedly based on the scientific principles of the satisfying qualities of food and energy density, encouraging slimmers to consume low energy dense but nutritious foods to satisfy hunger while limiting intake of the high energy dense foods.

Free Food Plan: Red VS Green

In an effort to provide a unique dieting experience for their slimmers, the people behind the Slimming World diet offered Food Optimizing unlimited choices of so-called "free foods", which the dieter can eat to his heart’s content, divided conveniently into two plans:

1. Red Plan- offers unlimited amounts of protein, such as:

  • lean meats
  • white fish
  • poutlry
  • most fruits and veggies

2. Green Plan– offers unlimited carbs, such as:

  • Grains
  • Fruits and veggies
  • Beans Pasta
  • Tofu
  • Eggs

Syn Me Up!

In addition, daily portions of the slimmer’s favorite treats are allowed in what the Slimming world Diet calls as a "syn". These high calorie, less filling food, may it be the slimmer’s favorite fastfood takeaway, a glass of wine or a favored chocolate brand, will be allowed in portion controlled sizes. Each of these foods will be given a Syn value, and most slimmers will have a 5 to 15 Syn allowance daily.

The Skinny

A formal exercise routine may not be included int he Slimming World’s Diet program, but participants are still encouraged to be active. And with the option to choose between the Red Plan or Green Plan, slimmers are given more flexibility and freedom, making motivation strong all throughout the program. It’s no wonder the Slimming World’s diet has a relatively high success rate among those who wish to slim down.
