Do Genetics Affect Weight and Weight Gain?

Health & Motivation

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could blame our genes for our weight problems. “I’m fat! Too bad I can’t do anything about it because I have bad fat genes.” This is the reasoning some people use to avoid doing whatever it takes to lose weight. Such nonsense.

It is true. I won’t deny it. Your genes influence how fast you gain weight, how your body looks, where you store fat and how fast you lose weight. This doesn’t mean that you can have 100 pounds of fat and not do anything about it. Blaming your genes for your weight problems will only keep you fat.

I can’t say I’ve been dealt great fat burning genes. On the contrary. I have some very stubborn belly fat genes that make my belly fat very resilient. This hasn’t stopped me from losing weight. I still have some belly fat, I’m not skinny. But I am waging constant war on my belly fat and my dream is to have a six pack one day.

To lose weight you have to work hard. That is true. And if you were dealt a bad hand of cards at birth it doesn’t mean you can’t win the game of life. I don’t care how crappy you might think your life is. I guarantee that there is someone out there who has it even tougher.

Your genes determine just a part of your life. A small part in fact. Your determination and will power is all you need to forge the kind of body and life you want to have. That is the big secret. Never take your eyes off your goals and your life vision. There are people who have surpassed what seemed insurmountable obstacles and created for themselves a dream life. They are the stuff of legends, and you can be one of them too.
